BH1959 is a multimedia project about a Roman woman who was exhumed in Eastbourne, whose story has now become lost to time. Commonly referred to as ‘The Beachy Head Lady’ or by her case number ‘BH1959’ her existence is often reduced to sentences such as "her bones were without disease and her teeth were in good condition”.
By melding historical fact with fantasy the artist invites the viewer to imagine what life would have been like for this young Roman woman living in Britain, encouraging them to undertake their own speculative archaeology. The collection includes a handmade rug depicting the landscape she was buried within, illustrative ceramics and other sensory objects, all of which are inspired by different elements that may have made up this elusive woman's life.
